This page lists everything TheQnA stores on your device, and why.
Two kinds of storage, and only one of them asks. Everything TheQnA needs to work — your sign-in, the game in progress, your language — is stored without asking, because it is strictly necessary for the thing you asked for. That is the exemption under regulation 6(4) of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. Analytics is not necessary, so it does ask, and it does nothing at all until you say yes.
Analytics, and the banner
We measure how the site is used — which pages get opened, where people stop, how many games get finished — so we can make it better. We do not measure who you are. Team names, game codes and email addresses are never sent; the code that sends events allows numbers and a short fixed list of words through and drops everything else, so a name cannot leak by being passed under a field nobody thought of.
The measuring is done by Plausible, which is cookieless: it sets nothing on your device at all and keeps no personal data. We chose it over the usual alternatives for that reason.
Nothing is loaded and nothing is sent until you choose Allow — the script is not fetched, because fetching it would already be telling somebody you were here. If you choose No thanks, the events raised in the meantime are discarded rather than held. Either answer is remembered for twelve months, after which the banner asks once more.
To change your mind, clear this site's data in your browser and the banner will ask again on your next visit.
What is stored
- Your answer to the banner — yes or no, and the date you gave it, so you are not asked again for a year.
- Your sign-in session — kept in local storage by our authentication provider so you are not signed out on every page load. Cleared when you sign out.
- The game in progress — the board and scores, kept locally so a reload or a closed tab does not lose the game.
- Pending saves — a game change that could not reach the server is queued locally and sent when the connection returns.
- Your language and theme — so the site opens the way you left it.
- Whether you have seen the tour — so it is not shown twice.
These are stored in your browser's local storage rather than as cookies. The rules are the same either way; the label is not what matters.
Third parties
The site loads its typeface from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google's servers when a page loads. Google receives your IP address and user-agent as part of that request. No cookie is set by it.
Cloudflare serves the site and may set a strictly necessary cookie to keep the connection secure and to tell traffic apart from attacks.
Clearing it
Signing out clears the session. Clearing site data in your browser removes everything on this page, including any unfinished game. Blocking storage entirely will stop the game saving, and sign-in will not persist.
